pH is a measure of the concentration of free H⁺ ions in solution, these determine the basicity or acidity of the solution.

The scale shown in the LCD goes from 0 to 14, where below 7 indicates acidic values, 7 is the neutrality value (OH^- ions are in equal numbers with H⁺ ions) , while above 7 indicates basic values.

The pH value is important for the proper metabolism of the animals you raise, and it is different for each natural environment you recreate in your aquarium. Amazonian or Asian basins are generally acidic (pH < 7), while large African lakes or marine aquarium are basic (pH > 7).
