Carbonate hardness is a unit of measurement used to indicate the buffering capacity of water. It measures the amount of a multitude of anions such as carbonates, bicarbonates, and borates dissolved in water. Carbonate hardness characterizes the capacity-buffering capacity, that is, the capacity required to maintain a stable pH value of water whether marine or fresh. A stable pH value is desirable for fish and invertebrates and is an important prerequisite for their well-being. That is why it is good to constantly monitor the present KH value of an aquarium. In a marine water aquarium, alkalinity should range between 7° and 9° dKH (German degrees), while in a freshwater aquarium it should not fall below 3° dKH with peaks of 8 -10° for aquariums with fish from East Africa (but it is always better to inquire about the characteristics of the biotope being spawned).
